World Fantasy Conference

11/7/2007   Well the long awaited World Fantasy Conference in Saratoga Springs, New York, has come and gone. Did it live up to the expectations, which were outrageously high? Yes and no. I did get some nibbles--I met an editor from Tor books but didn't pitch to him. He gets a followup email. I was asked to submit Shellyman to an anthology by another editor. No guarantees there although Julie was incredibly friendly and helpful. The agent who had asked for my manuscript of Prophecy a few weeks ago couldn't be found. In fact all of the agents I researched were MIA and, believe me, I looked. So that was a bit disappointing.

But I met lots of fantastic people and had a great time.

Oh, and I spent an evening with Guy Gavriel Kay. Just thought I'd throw that in here. In fact he bought me a scotch . . a 15 year old scotch and sat there spinning stories and talking. I was in awe. In fact, I was like a dumb struck school girl. Did I tell him that he is one of the reasons I write Celtic fantasy? No. Did I tell him we share a fascination about Lady of Shallot (he wrote a poem about it)? No. Did I talk to him about mythology -- my passion? No. Did I do anything but smile like a complete idiot? No. Not really. No. But did I enjoy every moment of his company? Absolutely. He seems like a wonderful person. Very approachable. Very friendly. And originally from Winnipeg! In fact he grew up on my street just a fewl blocks down. Hmmm, I wonder if he is going to make a pilgrimage home in the near future????? I think I owe him a scotch. Thank heavens I've regained my faculties! It's been many a year since any man has made me lose my mind . . at least in a positive way . .

You know the good thing? You have TONS to talk to him about, when you buy him a scotch. Tons. Could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Have to go now. Must let Ryan know you actually posted something. (Tee hee)

Hey, going to share your contact with the anthology...or is that limited only to those who actually went? How come you didn't add that I 'thought' about buying you a scotch? Isn't that as impressive as meeting one of your literary idols who DID buy you a scotch? And it seems that you left out Dilbert (Marvin?) role in all of this. Afterall, it was Dilbert who introduced you to Guy Gavriel Kay.

Jealousy becomes you, Ryan. You should always wear that shade of green!
